Siding Over Wood

Many older homes were originally finished with painted wood siding. When properly evaluated and prepared, new siding systems can be installed over existing wood, improving durability, appearance, and wall performance without full structural removal.

This approach is commonly used during full siding replacements, partial upgrades, and exterior renovations on residential homes. 

Installing siding over wood is only appropriate when the underlying structure is sound. Before any new materials are installed, existing wood siding and sheathing are inspected for:

• Rigid insulation — used when improving wall performance

In all cases, a moisture-management layer is installed. Housewrap is never skipped, whether used alone or in combination with insulation.
