Siding Over Wood

Updating Homes with Existing Wood ExteriorsUpdating Homes with Existing Wood Exteriors

Many older homes were originally finished with painted wood siding. When properly evaluated and prepared, new siding systems can be installed over existing wood, improving durability, appearance, and wall performance without full structural removal.

This approach is commonly used during full siding replacements, partial upgrades, and exterior renovations on residential homes.

Assessment

Evaluating Existing Wood Conditions

Installing siding over wood is only appropriate when the underlying structure is sound. Before any new materials are installed, existing wood siding and sheathing are inspected for:

  • Rot or moisture damage
  • Structural movement or warping
  • Insect damage
  • Loose or failing boards

Any compromised sections must be repaired or removed to create a stable base for the new siding system.

Wall Preparation

Housewrap Is Always Installed When No Insulation Is Used

Proper wall preparation is critical when installing siding over wood. When rigid insulation is not being added, housewrap is always installed over the existing wood siding before new cladding is applied.

This preparation typically includes:

  • Securing loose wood siding or sheathing
  • Flattening uneven surfaces
  • Installing continuous housewrap as a moisture and air barrier
  • Sealing seams and detailing around openings

Housewrap helps manage moisture infiltration and airflow behind the siding, forming a critical part of the wall system.

System Options

Housewrap or Insulation — Always One or the Other

When siding is installed over wood, one of two system approaches is used:

  • Housewrap only — used when insulation is not required or not part of the project scope

  • Rigid insulation — used when improving wall performance

In all cases, a moisture-management layer is installed. Housewrap is never skipped, whether used alone or in combination with insulation.

Insulation options are outlined on the 1″ Silverboard (Plus Other Thicknesses) and Insulated Siding pages.

Siding Materials Installed Over Wood

Once the wall system is properly prepared with housewrap or insulation, several siding materials can be installed over existing wood, including:

  • Vinyl siding
  • Aluminum siding Gentek Deluxe D4 or 8"
  • Steel siding
  • Architectural accent materials

Material selection depends on wall condition, design goals, and overall project scope.

Ideal for Exterior Renovations

Installing siding over wood is commonly used for:

  • Full exterior siding replacements
  • Partial upgrades on older homes
  • Homes with painted or aging wood
  • Renovations where structural removal is not required

This method modernizes the exterior while maintaining a controlled project scope.

Installation

Sequencing and Detailing Matter

Correct sequencing is essential when installing siding over wood. Housewrap integration, flashing details, fastening methods, and expansion allowances must all be handled correctly to ensure long-term performance.

Best practices are outlined on the Siding Installation and Proper Siding Installation pages.
